How much RAM do you have? If you have a very small amount.. your computer might not have the ability to do both and run smooth.

Download and install VLC player and be done with it. VLC player is an open-source, more capable, non-codec needing media player. Oh, I omitted one detail, it doesn't have problems

VLC will play pretty much anything you can throw at it. Shoutcast stream radio, movies, music. Its a very featured media player.
