I am unable to get any microphone to work via the line-in mic socket on my laptop, under Windows Vista. The same microphones work fine on a different laptop with Windows XP.
I have re-installed drivers and checked over the sound settings. The weird thing is that if I plug any headphones into the mic line-in socket...that does work ok as a microphone (when you speak into the ear-pieces). This leads me to think its some sort of gain/boost setting that needs adjusting ?
