Sound slow and distorted

Hello
I am having a bit of a nightmare with my Dell PC - I am running Vista and recently reformatted it as the internet clock had stopped working, it was losing up to an hour a day - unfortunately the reformat has not solved that problem and created a new one - now all the sounds my PC make are slow and distorted - from the 'welcome' sound when the PB boots up to mp3 and CD playback - even the images on WMP are slow and distorted. I have tried downloading new drivers etc. but nothing seems to work, everything is slow and distorted on speakers and thru headphones - even the 'test' sounds are the same.
Can anyone help??

My first thought was that you need a new CMOS battery on the motherboard.

Did the Dell do this right after your reformat on some time later? If the former, you may have to do a backup and a clean format, if the latter, then try performing a system restore to the earliest point available.

Is it still losing time too? Replacing the CMOS battery may not be a bad idea.

Hi
It did it right after the reformat - before the reformat it was losing time but the sound was fine, mp3s etc played without a hitch. After the reformat I am getting the hideous slo-mo distortion effect and the clock is still slow even when I reset it to a different internet clock. The PC was also making a horrible squeal sound every time I pressed on a track title on my cd burning software but that now seems to have gone overnight.
Similarly the sound all seemed to sort itself out for a day or two with mp3s playing OK then it's started again!
Forgive me for being a novice how do I do a backup and clean format? Is that reformatting it all over again?
