Vanishing Sound in Vista

Hi forum,
A peculiar situation  Sound often completely disappears from Vista from time to time..I mean everything ..Windows Media Player, YouTube and Windows Sounds. Sometimes I can retrieve it by re-booting the Laptop or recently I had to uninstall the Sound Driver in Device Manager and re-boot again. Apparently when you do this it reinstalls a more up to date driver automatically. Other occasions I have uninstalled Adobe Flash Player 10X and then gone on their site and re-installed it. A look at all settings reveals that nothing is muted. Using one or all of the methods above usually gets the sound back but it is a nuisance:huh: I wonder if a member could suggest what might be happening..as I say 9 times out of 10 sound is o'kay.
System..Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit)

I don't think it will install a more up to date driver on reboot. It is more likely to install the generic Vista driver.
I have seen two methods to install the driver.
Method 1
Go to device manager and expand the sound entry and see what sound card you have. If it is Realtek there is a link at the top of this page.
Download the correct driver to your desktop.
Go back to device manager and remove the sound driver and reinstall.
When it asks if you would like to go on line or browse your computer, say browse.
Browse to the download.

Method 2
Download the driver from Realtek, Right click and run as administrator,
It will tell you you have a driver and ask if you would like it removed, tick yes.
Reboot
Go to the download and right click, run as administrator.
It will install and ask you to reboot again.

Hello ilikefree,
No, I have not got Realtek. I have two items in the expanded list ..(1) IDT High Def AUDIO CODEC and (2) NVIDIA HDMI Audio. I am not very technical and am puzzled as to which would relate to my actual sound card. As the King sang in "King and I"......"tis a puzzlement".
