How do you play protected audio files?

I had an old computer and didn't realize that every song that I ripped from CD's was protected. Now I took my old hard drive out of that computer to get the stuff off of it, and copied all of the audio files to my current computer, but they won't play because they're protected. How do I play these songs?

What is the extention for the song? is it a .aac or .mp3 or .m4a... etc

Also what Audio program did you use on the previous computer?

(Itunes, Windows Media player... Etc)
