No sound from optical output? Going crazy

Hi people,

Let me introduce myself, Im Jonathan, a regular mac user...with a pc gamer rig that I use like once a week or so...I know shame on me. So here comes the story, I am trying to connect the 5.1 home theater (panasonic SA-PM08) that some good hearted person gave me through optical output to my ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe motherboard.

There is no sound coming at all, when opening the volume mixer window I can see sound from the digital output device going on with itunes running in the back and when I open the playback window it says that the digital device is working fine but the configure and set default buttons are grayed, I cant have access to them. I tried downloading some drivers directly from asus but it doesnt work, tried the soundmax 2000b driver too after looking online but I just cant seem to download it, there is all sorts of errors when I try to install it.

I am clueless and going on the crazy side pretty soon. I just want to finish Fallout 3! Please any help, theories and solutions would be amazing!
