No Sound Device Detected

It is pretty embarrassing when I have to ask for help on this but my Mothers Gateway Model NX860XL decided today to not have any sound device in device manager.

So I need some help with how to get it working again.
Things I've tried
Startup repair
System recovery
Downloading and installing the driver.
MPC purchased the professional division of Gateway products, this I found out by entering the serial number MPC Information

Here are the specs http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/SonicC/1008647sp3.shtml I could use the Texas instruments card reader drivers as well as the Soundblaster Pro Midi
Should also maybe get the Sigma Tel 9250 drivers.

Yet I will still need to know how to get windows Vista 32bit to recognize the sound device.

Thanks. Fabe

Depends on what model of computer you got, some come with the option that you can run a hardware diagnose test on the machine from bios or start up..
or you can download a hardware diagnose tool, can't find any good free one at the moment.. noramally those software are paid version and you need to boot from cd to be able to run the diagnose if your computer model don't come with one..
I will sugguest its a hardware failure as its not showing up on the device manager.. even if you go through add new hardware you can't detect it..

cheers

At this point I'm fairly certain that the sound chip has quit functioning. Trying to go through add hardware it tries to install the device but an error occurs saying an error has occurred a device attached to your system isn't working properly.

So I Will most likely get a USB sound dongle. So you can close this thread.
Thanks for your help

Hi,

Try this it worked for me!

When Windows did a sound driver up-date it some how screwed up & the fix was as follows: -

Enter the system bios

Scroll accross & down to the sound aspect of the settings in your Bios & set it to "force active" (you could de-activate, reboot & then re-activate it on the next boot) this too might work.

It should then re-appear & start working?

Please let us know if this fix works on other m/c's.

Gateways bios has very limited settings none of which have anything to do with sound devices.

Hi,

It seems there is a CMOS battery in this unit (Not sure where it is at this time).

How much knowledge of this unit (NX860XL) do you have? I have none!

You could do a complete reset on the CMOS & that could reactivate the sound device?

Remove the battery (whilst powered down & battery removed obviously).

You might get a re-activation of the device when the battery is re-fitted some 30 mins later when rebooted?

There might be a combineation of things needed to achieve this so I will keep looking. (battery, power button pressing etc, etc). I'll keep looking.

There is something mentioned on page 119 of the included pdf file about fn F1 for status indicators? Try that too.

I should have included that in my first post. I can't get to the battery (if their is one)but I have removed the AC adapter and the battery for over 30minutes then put it back together with no difference.

Hi again,

The CMOS battery could be under the keyboard?

Please look at the included pdf file to remove the keyboard & look!
