headphones not detectable

Earlier today, my headphones were working fine when plugged into my laptop (Asus pro50SR) (OS: 32bit windows home premium vista), then suddenly when i plugged them back in, there was no sound. I tried checking my playback devices and the headphones option wasn't there, i also tried updating/reinstalling the drivers in control panel. Though realtek HD audio manager detects audio being plugged in & my internal speakers work fine (attached to laptop). Please help!
