Solved Sound 99% inaudible Vista CQ40 Notebook

Good people

I fixed several annoying problems with help from a furum member, but in the process sounds, start-up +Microsoft noises through the inbuilt speakers have disappeared.
When I plug my Skype in via USB port minimal sound can be heard, as can through headphone speskers when plugged in. The media player handles a CD with similar result.

When I look at the volume indicator in the bottom right tray, it indicates fluctuating levels maybe 3 - 6%, despite the control being at 100.

All today I have been reading various answers on forums, but cannot find any solution. Many suggestions suggest I g to places on Control Panel that do not exist under the name supplied.

Does anyone have any idea(s) where I might find a way to fix this?

Many thanx in advance

Hope this is in correct thread !!

G'day Lottiemansion

Going to the link I hit the same brick wall that I did all yesterday. I am asked continuously for product data, which product is not on first list. So.

> Choose another product
> Notebook and tablet PCs
>Compaq Presario Notebook PCs
>Compaq CQ40-400 Notebook PC Series
and hit the wall.

Product name (Compaq Presario CQ40)

Part and/or Product number (VG 489 PA# ABG)
Model description (Presario CQ40-419AU)

Tried every option I could identify.
Changed country of origin to Australia, does not work.
Common answer is "cannot identify etc"

I will have to keep on trying. What with Vista and its - shall we say - idiosyncracies, this notebook's performance is not amusing.

Thank you so much for your advice, most appreciated

Hallo Lottiemansion

Thank you for your patience and advice.
I have made some progress. Have gone over everything again (checking my own actions) AND your latest advice, which now enables sound - from Windows Med Player - via stereo headphones single plug as indicated on front of laptop - of audio CD.

Still cannot hear Windows start-up and similiar sounds.

All through this Skype telephone via USB has worked faultlessly.

Via Control Panel,

first to SOUND,
there are shown :
1. Digital Output devise (HDMI) \ Working
2. Speakers and Headphones - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC \ Working
3. SPDIF - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC \ Working
number 2. ahows its green light.

second to IDT Audio Control Panel
> IDT HD Sound; I have played with every alternative combination possible, with no discernible effect.

With SKYPE and the headphones working, I expect I could live without the sounds that used to emmanate from the notebook's tiny (tinny) speakers. Except that the discrepancy offends my engineering background - there MUST be a reason.

Comments, please, if you are not already fed-up with this damned thing?

Kindest regards and thanks for your help thus far

Hi,

I'm off to work in 10 mins, but do you here the sounds in the headphones?

Look in control panel & select sounds. Try testing there to see if you can here any, headphones & speakers. OK?

I cannot find anywhere on my system anything remotely like shown in your #8.
Cannot find Realtek, or a page/window mentioning "Sound System setup.jpg"

Re your #9, that pane is identical to that you transmit as an example.

What do you think of a friend's suggestion (here in Australia) that I colour Vista invisible, and load a clean, up-to-date version of XP-Pro ?

Thanks again
errol

Hi,

Have you scrolled down the list of sounds in the "Sound" setup as per picture in #9 & tested the sounds played on the speakers for various/ all the selections?

Hi,

Have you scrolled down the list of sounds in the "Sound" setup as per picture in #9 & tested the sounds played on the speakers for various/ all the selections?

Yep ! Have tried every combination with nil result. One of the many things that baffle me is that some things on Control Panel - and other places - sent by you and other kind people, and also obtainable from other fora, are identical to my Vista, whereas some are different to differing degree(s) to those on my Vista, or not apparently extant on my Vista.

But I have a few more avenues to explore, thank you.confusion

What damage, confusion or complication can I cause by downloading all the drivers suggested?

I cannot expect you and other kind people to continue devoting your time to my piddling problems; after all I can live without the Microsoft sounds via the laptop's minuscule inbuilt speakers.

Again my unequivocal appreciation,
erw

Success ! Or at least I am cautiously optimistic that via the help received this elusive state has been achieved.

I spent many hours downloading drivers and various 'fix-it' programmes, paying for them, applying them as per instructions, failing to achieve any result, complaining and requesting and receiving refunds for the not inconsiderable amount of money involve.

It was the link to "HP technical support (United Kingdom - English)" from your #13 that I attribute to facilitating the breakthrough. I stayed with the 'UK' link, as my English is closer aligned here than to the 'US' language version. Almost simultaneously with these downloads, Microsoft sent me - amongst other stuff including Adobe etcetera - some driver updates. Whether this contributed anything to the solution I will never know. But somehow I doubt it. My sounds are all operative again, making access to various items/sources again available. One does not realise how important these everyday functions can be until they are withdrawn.

Writing yet another 'thank you', seems somehow a tad trite and platitudinous, but with the constraints of the medium, and the occasion, it is the best I can do.

THANK YOU !
NNNN

Hi,

I am so pleased you have managed to fix your sound issue.

Sorry I was unable to provide the full solution but your persistance has paid off, well done.
