Tried to click on in notification area but still nothing. Just disappeared a week ago or so. I googled and saw several writeups but they were dated. Any suggestions here?

G'day Mate,

Are you referring to the System Volume Control Icon in the Notification Area?

If so, from time to time, the Volume Control and the other System icons in the Notification Area - Network, Clock, and Power status, have an annoying habit of 'disappearing' from the area, and appearing disabled and 'greyed out' under the Notification Area tab of the Taskbar Properties.

I've found that the easiest fix is to be found in Brink's Tutorial here;

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/106787-notification-area-system-icons.html

I recommend that you follow the instructions under METHOD THREE - Using a REG File Download -
2. For the Volume Control - B) To enable the Volume Icon.....here;

Volume Icon.JPG

I usually save the downloaded File to the Desktop, and to install the File, just right click and select Merge. Then it's just a matter of giving the OK/Yes to the next couple of steps to complete the change to the Registry, and most importantly, then to do a Reboot.

The Icon will again show in the Notification Area, after the Reboot.

Hope that this helps.

The same thing has happened to me at the same time. I suspect a weekly update to Vista is the problem. Of the four system icons in the notification area, only the clock is working. Volume, Network, and Power icons are all grayed out and inaccessable. I'm still looking for the solution.

Mate,

Welcome to Vista Forums, and let's see if we can get this glitch sorted for you.

I suggest that you have a read of my post above for a solution to what you are experiencing.

Have a good read of the entire Tutorial by Shawn that I show as a link in the post, and follow the path that you feel most comfortable with to re-enable your system icons.

Personally speaking, I find the method that I've outlined above to re-enable any of the Notification Tray system icons, the easiest to apply, and you will find all the ones you are missing, also listed under Method Three.

I hope that this helps....but don't forget to post back with results.

Cheers.
