Strange sound problems

My laptop was working fine for the longest. Only today have I noted some oddities as I went to listen to some music; There was no sound. I checked that my headphones were plugged in properly, and I didn't mute the volume. In fact, when I went to turn up the volume, explorer.exe crashed. It quickly rebooted itself, and the volume mixer popped up as well. I moved the slider manually, and what do you know? Explorer.exe crashes yet again. I attempt to open the Realtek Audio Manager, only to have that crash as well. Restarting the laptop didn't fix a thing.

If you can get into Control Panel\Administrative Tools, take a look at the event viewer and see if it gives you any clues.
