Hey Ya'll...I have a 32 bit HP dv6 laptop all factory insides except new toshiba HD after original failed. I used recovery discs to re-install Vista Home Premium. All went well but NO Sound. All indications say speakers, etc. working. Ran sfc and repaired some files but not all. Dont know how to retrieve CBS files or how to interpret them. Would like some tips on how to recover my sound without losing everything again.

Welcome
I think its the audio driver.
Go to search, by the start button, type device manager. In manager, look for audio, update the driver.

Hey Rich thanks for the reply. Drivers are up to date. Sorry,should have indicatred that in my initial submission. Everything says speakers are working which leads me to belive its a Window$ thing.

Go to the audio driver and install the previous version. Make a system restore first, so it will be easy to make any necessary changes. After you install the previous version, boot.

OK Rich, here goes. Did as advised, changed all drivers and rebooted still no sound and red speaker iconilluminated. Went to system restore from a point last night. Ran it and gave me a box that said did not restore all files because of error. Restarted and system sounds(boot, etc.) came back. Went to device mgr. and tested OK. Put in music CD and voila, it played. Still have speaker icon next to Start button indicating sound is off (red). How do I get that to change? Or do I need other files changed? What a deal....JasL

If it were my computer and everything worked the way it should, I would forget about the icon.
But if you must change it, start with a boot, not a restart.

It turned white for a few seconds and went back red on boot. Everything still works. If its a pain to get it to work Ill get used to it. Thankful I got it back. Much abliged Rich. JasL
