Sound distorted and stuttering in windowed mode.

Hello!

I recently reinstalled my Vista Home Premium 32bit. Everything seems to work, except the sound. It's choppy, distorted and crackling when I listen to music, watch videos or play games.
The peculiar thing is, that when I enter full screen mode in either a game or a video, the sound becomes normal and I also my FPS in video games also goes back to the normal 60-120 it was with the last installation.

I have a C-Media sound driver and ATI HD 4600 series graphics card. Both should be running latest drivers, AFAIK.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,
Jock

Just wanted to check- have you installed SP1, SP2 and all subsequent updates?

What is the driver designation for the C-media audio?

Is the Xear 3D driver the original for your audio system?

If you go to Device Manager, Sound, are there any other audio devices listed?

There's also the AMD HD Audio Device, but I don't think it works.

I think Xear 3D has always been the one for my audio system. My very first one got replaced in the progress of fixing my PC and it worked until my latest Windows reinstallation.

Is there any indication in Device Manager that the AMD audio isn't working? If not, then you could try disabling the Xear to see what happens.

Something else you could look at is Control Panel\Sound. In playback, are all the devices shown as working when you are using the Windowed mode? Is it the same when you use the Full mode?

It says the AMD one isn't plugged in and I'm pretty sure it's disabled/removed completely and is showing wrong in the Device Manager.

Speakers (C-Media) are shown as working both when in full screen and windowed.

It's odd how when I don't do anything (scrolling, typing, clicking), the sound is normal (browsing internet, sitting on desktop etc) while music's playing. But the second I launch an application it becomes distorted.

Thank you very much for trying to help, though.

Was the AMD audio a sound card or is it integral to the mother board?

When you installed Xear, did you install a sound card?

I am not sure whether it was integrated or not. I have two sets of audio jack holes and only one of em' (C-media) work. I didn't install Xear, I just let DriverNavigator find and download all my drivers.

My Computer

I think it installed the wrong driver. More than likely, you need the AC97 driver. What is the manufacturer and model number for your computer?

If you go to the manufacturer's website and search on your model, it should tell you what the configuration was when built.

I downloaded the AC97 driver, but for some reason it failed to install after repeatedly asking my permission to install it (because Windows couldn't identify it's manufacturer).

Under my computer manufacturer, do you mean the company I bought it from or my mobo? My computer's model number is 9110-124929 and something called SN is 149538. I have an Asus P5PL2 motherboard. I couldn't find my computer from the company's site though, it's too old and they're not selling it anymore.

Sorry for my silly questions, I'm a complete rookie with computers.

Your motherboard uses an ADI1986A 6 audio codec.

You can get it here- Adi1986a 6 channel audio - Drivers Download

After you extract the file, right click on the .exe file and select Run as Administrator.

Is your computer an ASUS, Dell, Hp, etc.? I can't find any system with a model 9110 designation. Go to the Control Panel and click on System. Under System in the next screen, it should show the manufacturer and, likely, the model number.

The download link has no .zip file, just an UpdateMyDrivers program which requires a serial key.

There's no such information about any manufacturer or model number in the System screen.

The computer is Ordi, I believe, an Estonian company.

I don't suppose that you have any installation discs for your system?

Can you try installing the AC97 driver by running as administrator.
