No Audio (Vista 32 Bit)

No audio whatsoever on my computer. No computer sound effects, no music, no utube audio, no nothing!

I have a Dell XPS 420 (32 Bit) with Windows Vista SP1. The audio system for this computer is integrated into the mother board (no individual sound card).

There is no audio to my speakers or headphone jack. I swapped speakers and still have the same problem, so it's not the speakers.

The volume controller on my taskbar seems normal (volume 70 and no red x or mute) and the speaker icon has a green checkmark next to it and says that high definition audio device is working. Also, Windows Media Player volume control is normal.

I downloaded a Windows audio troubleshooter from another posting on this forum and it also said that my audio system is working properly.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I think you should install SP2 before we try troubleshooting. It could be that SP2 fixed some problems.

Thanks for responding Wither 3.

I never updated my computer since I bought it several years ago (afraid that the update would do more harm than good). I guess my audio problem has forced my hand on that. I had 136 updates (including two that were core elements of SP2). All installed successfully, so I guess I now have SP2 (I can't find verification anywhere though....the basic info page under control panel/system and maintanence still lists SP1).

At any rate, I still don't have audio. Any ideas?

I do not think that you have SP2
Go to search by the start button and type system information. Then look at the POP Up for your SP

You're right. It's listing 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Build 6001.

Wonder what I did wrong.....I updated everything that Windows Update had checked as important. Could SP2 be one of the 19 other unimportant ones (none were listed as SP2)?

If no sound after boot
Go to search by the start button and type device manager. Update the audio driver.
Go to search and type dxdiag, any problems shown for sound?

Still no audio after reboot.

Tried to update driver, but it came back....best driver software is already installed.

No results for search....dxdiag.

You just have to be online.
Make a system restore point, first, in the case of problems.

Made the restore point.

Let me make sure I'm uninstalling the right thing:

device manager////sound, video and game controllers////high definintion audio device////uninstall

Sorry richc46.....I'm a rookie and didn't take the device manager far enough. How's this:

device manager//sound, video and game controllers//high definintion audio device//properties//driver//uninstall

Thats correct.
Make a system restore point, first. If anything goes wrong, the system restore will bring it back, again.

If the above does not work, go to the speaker icon on the bottom right of your computer. Click on icon and make sure everything is turned on.
I read the entire thread, again. Re dxdiag. Go to search by the start button and type that word, it must be there and may help.

Uninstalled driver and rebooted computer. When computer came back 'up', driver reinstalled. Rebooted again, but still no audio.

Everything seems to be ok with speaker icon.....not muted and volume is set at 70.

Typed dxdiag in the start/run dialog box and it came up. no problems found.

I'm beginning to think I have a wire broke somewhere inside the tower.
