People praise avast and antivir, and never consider that pretty much all testing refers to the *commercial* versions rather than the freely available. It's not the same thing.

I'm quite confident that the avast mentioned here is the free one...

Re: Lastest version of Avast antivirus

I tried both and went to Avast. I felt more comfortable with it. At the time, AVG didn't offer rootkit detection with the free version. That may have changed. Avast has been on my Vista x64 system for about 120 days and I have no problem with it.

This is my 1st post but I have relied on this forum since I purchased my new system so thanks to everyone....especially the alien. (Brink or Shawn) whatever he would like to be called. What a great knowledge base this person has. Thanks, to everyone. I hope to be involved if I can ever help.

Well, Home is practically the same as Pro so paying up wont necessarily help you. Most if not all AVs have big problems with mentioned malware. I somehow get the feeling AV companies have been too eager to claim spyware protection... Something to keep in mind. If Avast have some money I think they should buy Malwarebytes and/or SuperAntiSpyware - or at least the guy who make Smitfraudfix Fact is many get that crap regardless of AV brand - some might be better than others of course.

Ive used Avast for 6-7 years so not bashing it. My clear choice for best free AV. Now I run out of a 2 year licens with Kaspersky and just bought 1 year with Avira Im almost missing Avast. Avira is good (minus Antivirus2009 etc.) but there is more to an AV than just detection rates. Avast offer nice forum/direct support where Avira is something I should not say here... Looking at their forum the word incompetent comes to mind, can say that much.
