Who owns the laptop? If you, tell your partner to remove the locking software. You could file a police report for computer tampering.

Nah, don't follow Brink's advice....that's awfully hard on laptops, they don't take a hard knock as well as a 5lb sledge hammer does...

Seriously now, just who the Heck does your partner think he is?
Like SCSIraidGURU said, who owns this laptop, you or him...or is it communally owned? Because if he had Administrative Rights on that laptop, he definitely can lower the rights on your account and lock you out of it if he wants to, and then you have to work it out with him or reinstall and break his fingers.

Really, there's not much you can do unless your...(ahem).."Partner", can work things out and he restores your admin status.
I like Brink's advice actually. Save whatever you can that you have access too, boot the DVD and reinstall Vista, and this time DO NOT give your partner an account of any kind.

System account is not the administrator of your workstation. System is used by services to enable them on startup. By default Administrator is disabled in Vista.

Tell your partner to give you the password or pack and leave. You will be contacting the police about computer tampering.

I would reinstall Vista. This time enforce password login. Make sure its a strong password. Don't user proper names. Follow the Microsoft rule using

Capital letter
Small letter
special character
number

Ak47$fH.

Don't add any other account. Once done. Tell your partner to take a long hike off a short peir. I would get rid of him.

Hi Jonathan,

Please do not post anything about hacking into your computer. The procedures you are wanting to do are illegal. Your best option would be to reinstall and maybe what SCSIraidGURU posted about your Partner above.

Sorry, :(

I would like to see and learn more on admin responsibilities...such as the commands and options available to save data. If i end up reinstalling vista that is ok...but i want to try something just to learn more on what i can do with my operating system...this is more indepth than i have experience before

I believe you sense i wan to hack into his computer...no...not into that...what i want is to get back into mine and learn how my partner was able to completely lock me out....one of the problem i have with this is that the spyware starts when i open the computer...i can only sign on his account and...i can not believe he would leave the disc drive available to me...if not available could i add a floppy drive and change the boot sequence to boot up...my best friend has the same laptop so i can make a boot disc and copy it to a floppy...any thoughts on this

He accessed your computer with your password, install an app, created a new account and changed your right. Best security is not allow anyone access to the physical computer. This is why server rooms are locked and only authorized users can get in.

Vista Backup and Restore does a backup to external drives, CD, and DVD. I was not happy they removed tape drives. You can backup just data or the entire computer.

You can manually copy files to an external drive, CD, or DVD.

I use an expensive method. I backup to three tape drives using Veritas Backup Exec 12 and a remote agent for Vista x64 Ultimate. This cost me about $4000. I can backup 3.3 GB/min to tape. I have five sets of tapes. I rotate them. The tapes are stored in a safe. When I travel overseas, one set goes to the server room at work and one set to my friends house. I have all my workgroup computers backed up to tape. I usually backup 2x a week.

Hi Buffboy,

Did you download that boot-disk software (no names thanks) That I mentioned to you last week for resetting the admin password? It can save yourself and everyone here giving you lots of useless infomation and recovery options when this boot-disk does exactly what you wanted.

Steven
