Major Problem, please help

Hello All, I have got a nasty bug on my vista laptop. I have tried just about everything to clean it up but with no luck. When the bug hits, it turns off the shell extension on AVG, disables all the shortcuts on my desktop. ( Turns the icons to a blank page as well as not letting them execute) When I click on the start menu all the "most used" programs are gone. It also disable the shut down option arrow from the start menu. I have avast, AVG, SypBot, SuperAntiSpyware, Windows Defender, Windows Firewall and Hijackthis all have found problems but have not fixed the major issue. I hope I am posting in the correct place for this type of help. Thanks for any information anyone can offer.....

Try Antivirus & Content Security Software | Securing Your Web World: - Trend Micro USA and run its free scan. I would remove AVG and get Avast 4.8. Lately, AVG has missed too much and is no longer reliable.

Normal, some of them have to be fixed manually+clean tools.
Would you attach your last hijackthis report (pls attach don't paste)

Re: Major Problem, please help

Hi datalife,

Your log looks OK, so it is better to try some more things to be sure there is nothing left.

1. Temporarily disable SpyBotS&D Tea timer so it doesn't interfere with the fix
  • 1) Run Spybot-S&D
    2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
    3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
    4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
    5) Restart your computer.
2. Temporarily disable the Real-time Protection on Windows Defender as it may interfere with the HijackThis fixes.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools => Options
  • Scroll down and uncheck Use real-time protection (recommended).
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
3. Go HERE and download TempFix.
Save it to your Desktop (but do not run it yet)

4. Reboot into Safe Mode

5. Right Click TempFix.zip ->> Extract all ->> And extract it to your Desktop
  • Open the TempFix Folder.
Right Click TempFix.vbe ->>Select Open Then Open to confirm.
As the program runs, it will appear that nothing is happening.
When the program is fnished it will produce a log for you C:\TempFix.txt
Attach the contents of that log in your reply.
6. Then reboot your PC into Normal Windows Mode->> Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hiajckthis log.
As well as the C:\TempFix.txt log

Re: Major Problem, please help

Well as of now, I have not had any problems. But whats funny, when doing all the steps posted the programs didnt find anything that needed to be removed. I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens. If everything is in working order I'm going to have to fly to Paris and by you a beer.

Re: Major Problem, please help

Hi sidney1st

You seem like you've been trained in HJT logs, I used to teach @ Tom Coyote and Spywareinfo.com.

Did you notice what I did?
Very few running processes...like zero svchost nor most other usual system processes are running. Plus all the O23's with Unknown Owner and missing files...almost half of them are system services.

I think this OS needs to be reinstalled myself at this point or there are just going to be weird problems from here on in. I think whatever got into this system has pretty much hosed it at this point and even tho you can clean it out, I don't think it's going to perform properly or predictably anymore.
What do you think??

Whenever you want, i am always ready for a good beer, but i'm used to the scottish tradition, so you'll have to add a whisky
