hi there thanks for reply
norton comes free with my isp so i thought i would use it but are you saying that windows firewall is better if so i will use that
cheers for help

My Computer

Windows Firewall is ok if set right, but not as good as most 3rd party free ones. If you have a 2008 version of Norton, then give it a try instead. If it is a 2007 version or older, then anything would be better than it. ;)

In my opinion windows firewall "if configured correctly" is better that Norton Firewall but not that is just an opinion

If you need a software firewall then like brink said Comodo Firewall is a very good one to use

however under certain circumstances you don't really need a software firewall if you have a reasonably good Router

I myself only use windows firewall as standard along with my router and its built in firewall and have never had a virus (i try to steer clear from those x-rated sites if you know what i mean)

takecare and thanks to all

hmmm I.S.P's only tend to give away older versions of Norton so i would double check again.... and if later down the line you find you can not access the internet at all then the most common solution is normaly to un-install Norton

well i wish you all the luck

:sarc:Do not buy your firewall! Use COMODO. Antivirus AVG. Spybot Search & Destroy. SpywareBlaster. AdWare SE. Use Firefox and Opera as Web Browsers.

+1 For Comodo Firewall

Get a Dlink router. Enable all the security functions and MAC filtering. Change its IP address. I would use Avast over AVG. I have seen too many with AVG in the last month with Trojan Horses. Avast does upgrade daily. I just use Windows firewall in Vista.

Re: Securing Vista

I currently run a dual boot system because an infant operating system like Vista will no doubt have security flaws. I have been doing system security work as a hobby for 10 + years.

I will try to impart some of that knowledge here.

First; I have set my router to stop basic attacks. (Enable Firewall (the general firewall switch) Next Reset the router Master Password.

As I said in my previous post, use AVG anti virus. It gives good protection without to many false alerts. COMODO Firewall is by far the best free or paid for Firewall to use with Vista. I say this because you cannot run Sygate Firewall on Vista. I run Sygate on my Xp drive because it is by far the best Firewall I have ever used.

To stop your Web Browser from being redirected to unsafe sites, use SpywareBlaster. This System security add on maintains a good data base of sites you really do not want to visit and stops your Browser from ending up on an unsafe web page.

Next, Spybot Search And destroy does some of the same things but also has an advance registry monitor. I personally do not use that feature but some user might find it helpful. I maintain my system in such a way as I do not need it.

Ad Aware Pro is worth the price. I use the Adwatch feature to stop cookie and, wacth currently running processes on the system.

I scan The system on a regular basis fo threats to insure that nothing has been hidden on my system. Keep you automatic update on to allow your system to get the latest Microsoft security updates.

I use Blacklight By FSecure to look for rootkit installations from time to time.

Browser security is a must! Use Firefox or Opera!

If you file share use utorrent and install PeerGuardian 2.

Setup Limited user account for the people using your system who you feel might compromise your security settings. Do not store your passwords on the system, put them on a removable storage device. Lock your system when you are not using it. I could go on and on about system security but this is not a tutorial; Just some goog advice.:sarc:

:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

Norton has a lot of problems with Vista as other people have said, and since Symantec and McAfee whined and moaned they didn't have access to the kernel, they were considering filing antitrust charges with the U.S. DOJ, because Microsoft wanted to make Vista more secure than Windows XP. As of Service Pack 1, Microsoft gave in, and allow security products from Symantec and McAfee access to the kernel and other key OS files, and from my understanding, as a result of this, the kernel and other key OS files, contrary to what Symantec and McAfee claim, are wide open, any program from those two companies, misses a virus, spyware or some other malware.

This is why, I don't use programs from either of those two companies and use Windows Live OneCare 2.0.

I wholeheartedly agree with this.

I have 3 D-Link routers, my original DI-524 and a refurbished replacement I bought to try to save money (older firmware version) so I kept both, then I inherited a D-Link DGL4300 (GamerLounge) which I currently use as my router (wit the other 2 now working as 2 port switches :P).

I also have my Router logging all sorts of info and am using Kiwi Syslog Daemon to get the info from the router all the time so that any intrusion attempts are recorded. I then use the DShield client to convert the Kiwi Syslog catch file and submit the various intrusion attempts to DShield.org, and have a Task Scheduler item running to check once an hour (and Vista Task Scheduler can even bring the computer out of standby to do this, even with elevated privileges, and it send the computer right back to standby within 1 minute).

It is a good thing to have a router like this - the only better thing would be to have a true firewall device (hardware) in place to keep your entire home network safe.
