| Junior Member |  After Malware Attack, Cannot Edit Registry I have had a series of malware attacks. Despite good security (yeah, right!) from McAfee and Spy Sweeper, I now find that my IE homepage is locked and I cannot do a registry edit to unlock it. It says I cannot access it. I find that this is true anywhere in the registry! I have fiddled with security permissions, but they don't seem to give me access. Any help would be greatly appreciated!  |

I may not have made clear that I AM able to ACCESS the registry and maneuver about. I am just not able to make SOME changes in it. The change that I cannot make is to change my home page. It is locked and I am unable to unlock it. This must be a malware problem, for I recently tried making just any change in the registry, and I was, in fact, able to do so. Thanks. More later. |

I notice that you have had a variant of the 'Vundo' malware on your system. It is possible that if this hasn't been entirely removed that this could be causing your problem. Dwarf |

Here is the history of my attempt to rid my system of this pest! I have been spending days and days trying to eliminate the pesky Vundo-Variant/Small from my Dell Vista XPS PC. I have used numerous anti-spyware programs, including a-squared free, Blacklight Rootkit Detector, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware; Spy Weeper, Spyware Blaster, and SuperAntiSpyware. I have run all of these in regular boot and in safe mode. I have closed the Explorer process and the Windows logon, and shut down the PC with my button. I have deleted temp files. I have followed directions from numerous forums. The special Vundo removal programs (FixVundo [from Symantec], Vundo Fix, and VirtuMundoBeGone: none has detected the trojan!! Whenever I run either Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware, I get from 2 to 3 hits of this trojan (user files and registry files, in various combinations--the latest had no registry files, only user file entries, weird file names). I also get some nasty things show up in Hijack This. Every time I delete them, the same of different nasties reappear in the Hijack This file. I DO think I have had some luck with a program called T-R: Trojan Remover. I am using the trial version, and it said I had removed a file and it renamed others. (The log file (very long) from this run is attached.) But I see what looks like suspicious Vundo junk on the Hijack This log I sent you earlier. To repeat: it doesn't seem to matter whether I run the antispyware programs in regular mode or safe mode. Neither actually rids the trojan. I tried using Ultimate Boot Disk, but it doesn't seem to work in Vista...it seems to load, then the Windows logo appears and I get the blue screen of death, and the ultimate boot disk won't load. At this stage I am not sure whether or not Vundo is gone, and if there are traces, just how volatile they are! Also, attached is a screenshot of the home page that the malware reverted me to. When I clicked on IE's home page just now, I get Hotmail. The home page in the General options shows MSN as the home page. UPDATE: Indeed, in fact, there is a kind of lock on the home page in Spysweeper. I changed the home page options in Spysweeper, and now in IE, it DOES show the correct home page. But in the course of resetting the home page, which seems to be holding, it acted rather flakey, so I think Vundo is still doing its ugly stealthy work. BUT...it would seem that perhaps Spysweeper was preventing me from making registry changes to the locked home page option! So perhaps things are okay. I haven't had the annoying popups lately.
