Best free FILE encryption for x64?

I saw that there was a thread for drive encryption... I'd like to know about folder and file encryption. I tried truecrypt but found the interface to be really cumbersome. I'm looking for something more like Axcrypt, which can encrypt and decrypt with only a few clicks. Unfortunately, for Axcrypt to work you need to enable 32 bit windows explorer, which I don't want to do, Does anyone know any other secure and symple encryption programs?

P.S. How secure is UPEK's ProtectorSuite QL? It came with the fingerprint reader on my laptop but I don't quite trust it fully.

I tried 6.0. All of the device mounting and such got to me. I just want to quickly and easily be able to encrypt and decrypt a folder/vault/crypt/whatever you want to call it from the explorer menu.

Use the build in file encryption and just store your encryption cert on a smart card. Then just insert the card, add you pin, and your in!

Yargh! That's exactly what I wanted and I was really excited to try it out... until I was installing it and it said it was a demo version that would work until August 16. Kinda dumb because it says it's freeware on the page :(.

Thanks for your help though. I contacted the guy behind AxCrypt and he said he may release a 64 bit version later this year. I'll keep my eye out for that.

7Zip has file encryption? How do you use it? I played around with the GUI for a bit and couldn't find any option to encrypt an archive, or even to password protect it.

I looked at the help file and it says it supports AES... how do I password protect it?

You may have played around with the main GUI instead of the GUI that comes up when you try to make an archive....

This screen shot should explain it all:

To get it, all I did was right click a file (fruit.jpg) and then selected 7Zip from the context menu, then Add to archive from the child menu.

Thanks for the guide. I'll rep you again if it lets me. That seemed to work.

My problem now is that I tried to double encrypt a file... I had a .UEA file encrypted by UPEK that I then added to a .7z archive. When I opened the .7z and tried to open the .UEA, it didn't know what program to open it with. I tried several including the main UPEK app and explorer.exe and none of them worked... now all of my .UEA files won't open. I'll send an email to UPEK and ask what it opens with but in case they don't answer, does anybody here know?

My guess is that the encryption over the encryption breaks the first encryption.

I see. I'll try to encrypt a new archive and see if it works. Luckily I still haven't erased the unencrypted contents of the .UEA file just in case something like this happened while I was experimenting with encryption. Which should I use to encrypt, the fingerprint reader's 56 bit Blowfish or 7zip's AES?

7Zips AES is 256 bit - a lot harder to crack....

Well, I fixed my issue with ProtectorSuite QL and attempted a double encryption. It worked but I think I'll stick with ProtectorSuite rather than 7zip. Running both of them it was very slow to decrypt the second layer of encryption, and running 7zip by itself required me to extract the entire archive to view just a single small document. I have a question though... how difficult is it to fool a fingerprint sensor?

How difficult is it to fool a fingerprint reader?

Ummm, I have never tried to....when mine was working in Vista 32bit it knew my correct finger from my incorrect finger - and all 10 fingers have the exact same pattern (whorls) to it is pretty good in the one I have....

Stuffit has the option to encrypt, and even to make self-extracting zip files, and it works quite well. I am sure that you could use one of the free zip programs to do your encryption, and, at the same time, save a little drive space by zipping it. (I.E., use a zip program for the encryption ability, not for the zipping.) It's not that much of a hassle once you get used to it. I never got around to using Vista's encryption, but recently started to change my mind, and right clicked on a file, a jpg of my driver's license, and clicked encrypt. It then reminded me to back up my encryption key, so I changed my mind and clicked cancel. However, when I needed to open the file again, it wouldn't open in any photo program, saying that the program did not have permission. Then I noticed that the file name was in green. Fortunately, I have backups of backups, so I have not lost anything, but the spookiest thing of all is that I could see the thumnail of the jpg--how weird it is that such a file could be encrypted yet have a thumbnail available for view.
If you have just a simple text file, encrypt it using locknote by Steganos; it's free.
