my gf and i broke up and she left me the lap top i bought her. all my pics and some work and music are on there. I need to get in but i dont have the password and my x moved out east somewhere. its stuck on her profile to log in and i cant pick any other users. how can i get in to save my personal stuff? i just wanna burn my stuff them format the comp

As long as she didnt use file encryption you can bypass the user log-in and access all files.

Step1

Burn it to CD as an ISO image (ISO is a disk image. for free ISO image burning software):
ISO Recorder v3
to burn ISO right click downloaded ISO file and option to burn ISO image will be available with the above software. Nero users will find ISO image burning as program feature, and can add the downloaded file for burning.

Step2

Boot from the CD drive, put Linux CD in drive and boot. It will run Simply MEPIS from the CD, but it will not install

Step34

Sign in as: root, password: root

This will give you access to the drive and all folders.
