| Ultimate x64 | hard disk security I have a Vista64 Ultimate machine with 4 phsical hard drives. Seemingly ar random, the OS slaps write protection on an entire disk. I can go away for a coffee and come back BAM a key disk is write protected. ![]() I am logged onas administrator, the attributes fot the disk show that it is not write protected, but every time I try to write to it I get a "write prtotected" dialoge box. If I r reboot perhaps 3 times it clears and I am OK for a couple of days. Any cures without multiple re-boots? |

| Vista Ultimate x64 MAK, OpenSolaris 5, Gentoo 2008.1.... | Re: hard disk security Assuming, of course, that you have run multiple vulnerability scans (antivirus and anti malware and antirootkit) I think scrooge may have a good point - perhaps it is time to take a closer look at the hardware itself. |

| vista ultamate 64bit | Re: hard disk security when i google this error the most common answer is a virus however 1 response is that you don not have permission to write anything to that disc and is suggested to go to the properties of the disc and correct ant privileges C:/ right click properties security advanced |

| Vista Ultimate x64 MAK, OpenSolaris 5, Gentoo 2008.1.... | Re: hard disk security But then it would not just arbitrarily go away.... rosthorn - is it possible this is only happening because something all of a sudden is trying to write to a protected area of the HD (such as Program Files) and after two or three reboots you somehow get rid of it, only to have it reappear again? That certainly sounds like malicious behavior. However, I noticed that you said it happens randomly on *a* drive - is this to say it happens on *different drives? |
