windows Firewall shutting off

I just got an Acer Aspire last week. OS Vista basic. It came with a trial version of McAfee, so i uninstalled. Currently using AVG 8.0. Also running windows defender. On boot, security icon in tray indicates the windows firewall is shut down. I'm not sure if defender or AVG has built in firewall that is taking over ans shutting off the windows firewall. Any ideas?

Thanks
Bob

Hello romeschaefer, you need to download and run the McAfee removal tool in order to remove all remnants of it.

And no none of the apps you mentioned(defender-AVG) have firewalls.

It looks like McAfee turned you windows firewall off in favor of its own. Open the control panel and select the firewall icon and make sure that its not shut off.

I suggest dumping AVG and replacing it with AVAST. You system will luv ya for it.

In case you don't already know AVAST is free as well.

Don't forget to run that removal tool ASAP McAfee is just as bad as Norton when it comes to getting that garbage off your system.

Keep us informed.

My main rig runs Vista Ultimate or Server 2008. Depending on which Acronis image I decide to load.

McAfee can be a real pain to get rid of.....sometimes.
It's coming pre-installed on many new PC's today. Of course it's only a trial, which you must eventually PAY for.
I just removed it from a new Acer Mini-desktop, yesterday.

On my own PC I have the same problem with the Windows Firewall being shut off arbitrarily. (like, whenever!)
I just run a little script to turn it back on, or I can do it manually in the Windows Security Center. I've never found a reason for it and I have NO other firewall software on my PC. AVG 8.0 FREE has nothing to do with the firewall.

It doesn't happen every day or even every week, but just 'whenever'.

Just another one of Windows' little mysteries! :sarc:

Cheers mates!

Thanks for the info. I agree with you on the McAfee point. Any idea how I can REALLY get rid of the McAfee for good without going into RegEdit? or torching the HD and starting over fresh???
