Vista - virus on folder cant delete!!!

hi guys, i scan my laptop today and norton said i have a trojan virus in one of my folder (users>public>public music).
whenever i delete it windows dosnt respond. my pc hang, and hang. i disconnect the laptop battery in order to restart windows. pls help. i try to deletre that files 3 times and same thing happens, it always hang. pls help.

did you try it in safe mode?

If that doesn't work, you might try this: Take Ownership of file

garysgold, i take the ownership of that file but my pc hang. i think, taking ownership of the file is for windows security file only like the .dll file. but thank you any way we solved it. thanks for the quick response.

The reason you probably could not delete it before was that your public folders are shared - and that means that it is possible that someone else was linked to / locked with that file, and as long as it was shared, you cannot delete it. You PC wasn't actually hung, it was just in an endless loop trying to delete a file that it could not do so because it was being shared.

BTW, if there are other PCs on your network, better scan them as well for that same little bugger.

maybe you are also right. the folder i want to delete is the default folder in public music. the folder folder that already there after the clean install of windows. but why is norton find a trojan virus if it is already there. how about that??

That might also be due to a false positive. AntiMalware software are never perfect. What I usually do is take the file that any one antimalware program reports as a possible infection and submit it to Virustotal.com to have it analyzed. Then you'll be a lot more sure.

For example, if it says the file was first submitted 3 years ago, and only 2 out of 32 find it as malicious, then more than likely it is *not* malicious and those are false positives. OTOH, if the file has never been submitted, and 8 or 10 or more find it malicious, it is pretty safe to say that it is probably malicious and probably a rather new file as well.
