This might help to solve the problem. first do a restart to see if that will fix it, if not uninstall the program, click on start, then control panel click on classic view, then double click on Programs and Features. This will bring up Uninstalle or change a program. Locate the AVG 8.0 and RIGHT click on it. You will see two options uninstall or change click on uninstall and this will remove the program. Go back to the AVG web site and installed the program. You will get the latest version with all the update. Then click on the update if it doesn't automaticly update. Report back and post the results. Make sure you have a Internet Connection, good luck.

I had the same problem also. Mine was with windows firewall, I had to manually add AVG to the add/program tab. Once I did that it updated just fine. What firewall are you using?

Good advice, I thought about the firewall after I posted. I have the paid version and the first thing it does is turn off Windows Firewall during installation so that they are not in conflict. I dont know if the free version does this.

Hi,

Don't think it had anything to do with defrag! I'm running Vista 64 and noticed two days ago that AVG had switched itself off. I now get the same symptoms. The user interface won't start and from Security center it won't switch on.

I'll save you some work ... I've already deinstalled and reinstalled, and when I restart the system I get the same symptoms!!

: ((

*No* idea what the problem is I'm afraid. Thought it was a virus of some sort, but other virus scanners have come up clean.

Cheers,
Ripface.

In *your* case I initially thought that AVG hosed itself because jk defrag was trying to move the avg files while it was running - no dice there, cause it is pretty hard to move a file when it is in use.

However, after reading

I suspect AVG did an automatic update that hosed it - you *both* should be checking the AVG forums for this as I bet a lot of people are experiencing this same problem.

I have had a similar problem with AVG a while ago, it would just stop updating. I think you should leave AVG all together and get Avast! I love avast and it self updates everyday. It stoped major viruses from infecting my computer so many times where AVG has failed. Avast is also free just give it a google.
