Antivirus 2008

I don't think Antivirus 2008 is installed on my notebook, I'm not sure, but there's a security balloon in the notification tray saying "You have a security problem!". Also antivirus 2008 webpage keeps opening. its getting too irritating. I'm facing this problem since 3 days now.
Kindly help..

My Computer

What does it say when you click on the balloon? It should tell you if it is your antivirus or firewall or both that is not running and give you the option of running them if installed.

My Computer

On clicking the balloon, the antivirus webpage opens and asks for installation. It keeps asking to scan the pc for virus.

My Computer

If you have never scanned your pc almost all antivirus programs will cause the security baloon to pop up until you run your first scan.

My Computer

But isn't antivirus 2008 a fake antivirus? I already have an antivirus(NOD32) and an antispyware(SUPERAntiSpyware). Both of them haven't solved the problem (and neither have detected any virus in the machine). All i want is that balloon to be removed and the webpage of antivirus 2008 never to appear again..
Please bear with me. I need help..

Its there. I used Avast, Trendmicro, S&D, and many others to slow it down. I got rid of it but not the other trojans installed with it. I ended up backing up and reinstalling.

This was the worst virus I ever fought in 25 years. I am glad it did not hit my corporate network. After a week of fighting Antivirus XP 2008 and all the associated Trojans, I decided it was time to backup my data and reinstall the OS from scratch. I booted the OS DVD and removed the OS partition. Shutdown. Restarted and reinstalled. Then, patched. Left my user in user level security and UAC is on. It would probably be better to do the same.

This particular virus, after reading about the troubles with it here and on the net, is one of the worst viruses for people to get infected with. It's a royal pain to remove.

I'm not letting the fact that I haven't been infected with it, lure me in to a false sense of security though. What's saving my hide from a lot of these viruses, is because I have XD Technology(cpu DEP on by default), DEP for IE 7 turned on, and DEP for the OS turned on at all times. This goes hand in hand, with having a decent internet security package running.

You should go to the following website, and download the Malwarebytes anti malware program, install it and run it, it may help in removing this bugger.

I ran Malwarebytes and S&D. It would remove parts of the trojans but more would come in. Once it takes hold, it is easier to reinstall.

You're right there, it's easier to reinstall to totally get rid of it.

Ouch.
Just out of curiousity, (and to help it from happening to other users) How did you end up getting so throughly infected in the first place? IE runs in protected mode, and UAC would prevent automatic installation and execution.

NM.
I see you turned off UAC, and then mistakenly downloaded the malware antivirus.

CNN infected e-mail.

I turned off UAC and had my user as an administrator. I never had a serious virus attack in 25 years. I did not think it would happen.

It launched. Avast Pro 4.8 stopped 3 viruses but it infected with VirtuMonde.

On the reinstall. I left my user in default mode. I did enable administrator and gave it a 13 alphanumerical password along with my users.

I had the same issue with my system & Mcafee was unable to detect it. I downloaded & did a full system scan through super antispyware. It removed a couple of trojans. And then I scanned through Mcafee & then removed approximately 13 infections. Anti-virus 2008 would create an add-on in IE & make sure that gets removed. As that is causing the antivirus page to showup again & again.

And you can also follow instructions on the following websites:
