limited permissions

I have vista home premium on a laptop and a pc. The laptop is a fujitsu and the pc is an hp. On both I have full admin rights and have uac turned off. the problem is that I can run commands from the dos window on the pc with no trouble. On the laptop, I can't and get "Access denied" if I try a simple command like ping or try to run net use. I've tried the tutorial on elevating admin privilege and it let me add to the registry. This came to light when I tried to install ruby on the laptop. The install went fine but when I tried to run ruby in interactive mode from the command shell, I got the access denied message. The funny thing is that one of the programs that come with Ruby which allows you to run commands interactively works but when I try to run 'gem install' to install Rails I get Access Denied. I can do all this on the pc with no problem and the command shell on both is set to run as Administrator.

Any ideas?

Re: limited permissions

Hi, xnfec, and welcome to the forums.

Have you tried contacting Fujitsu tech support about this? in All my experiences when running Vista the CMD line is not limited unless you are trying to do something in a restricted directory. Since commands like ping are accessible to anyone at any time, I would guess that it is either a tweak that has caused the system to go south (like a take ownership of a registry hive / system folder) or else something that Fujitsu is doing to configure their laptops a bit different than normal.

Since you do not mention having tweaked anything else, other than UAC, I have to suspect it is Fujitsu....

Re: limited permissions

That was going to be my next line of attack, but I was hoping it would be something doable in Vista.

Thanks for the reply
