Hi.

Hopefully this is in the right area, I want to know if there is a way to ensure that when my son logs in that he does not have the same start/all programmes displayed as I do, we have to use the same laptop, I have created an account for him, and enabled the parental controls, but I can not find a way to hide the programs that are installed.

On a different computer I had the same issue with him, and after many trips to and from the PC shop after he deletes or starts and changes something in the programs I have had enough, so that's why I am asking.

His account is a standard user, mine is the administrator user.

this is a quote from windows help and support:

Why use a standard user account instead of an administrator account?

The standard account can help protect your computer by preventing users from making changes that affect everyone who uses the computer. We recommend creating a standard account for each user.
When you are logged on to Windows with a standard account, you can do anything that you can do with an administrator account, but if you want to do something that affects other users of the computer, such as installing software or changing security settings, Windows might ask you to provide a password for an administrator account.

however, i dont think this will work with non windows/microsoft/pre-installed software's such as itunes and limewire and other software's alike... so in other words.. a standard user account will only protect against certain programs but not ones that you install your self. you may be able to access a parental controll setup in each individual program you want to block access to, this is usually located in options

hope i have helped somewhat

Hi

Thank you for your answer.

This does not not however help me out. Maybe I explained it wrong. I am the admin account on the system, my son (a 14yr old) is to be the standard user account. I have allready had numerous trips to and from the PC shop to get it put right after he has clicked and changed settings that affect the computer working, and yes he does not know the admin password, also I have restricted him with the parant settings, as to times and content, BUT and this is where it gets to be the reason for asking the question.

In my > All programs > are the programs that I use, these are the ones I need to remove from his > All programs list view.

So if I have in my > All Programs > Autocad

He must not have it displayed in his > All Programs (Blank)

I have allready found out how to remove certain programs like "runas'" and "Cmd" which is great, but removing from his menu the programs like CCC and Thosihba Recovery menu eludes me.

This is one solve I got that did 1/2 of the requirements.

The Start/All Programs menu will show every program that is installed for your user account, Start\All Programs folder.
Your user account Start/All Programs folder is located at:
C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs.
And at:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Removoing items from there does it only 1/2 way because when you remove from the:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

It removes them from the main accout as well, which is not what is required.

So the next step was this:

You might want to make a backup copy of these icons to an empty folder somewhere in your user account folder for safe keeping.
Remove the icons from the Standard User account Programs folder.
Next, 'move' the icons from the location for All Users to 'your' Programs folder and let them replace the same icons in that folder.

I have done this and the result is that although the Menu still shows the Directory entry id does not show any thing inside it, still a 1/2 way solve but better than none, I just hope he does not delete the directory fromhis view.

I know that many applications will place a shortcut or folder with shortcuts in both locations either by default or when you select the 'Install for all users' option in the programs installation options. Other programs will place their shortcuts in both folders by default without asking, so I will have to monitor this to keep an eye on it.

What is frustrating on top of all this that the gpedit is not installed in premium version, which would have made this much more strigforward that it all is.

In addition to looking here,

C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

also look in the same locations under your son's name and the default folder (will have to have "Show hidden files and folders" enabled). You can delete the ones from your son's, but double check that any that are in the default folder are also in your Start Menu because if they aren't in yours and you remove them without cut/copy and pasting them to yours, you will lose them from your start menu as well.

Do the same thing if there are any desktop shortcuts you don't want to to see/have.
