Windows Defender

Vista Home Premium

I have Defender disabled but I just had my services box open looking through it and Windows Defender start option is automatic. Is that the way it should be? I'm wondering because I'm having some little problems and trying to figure out what is causing them.

Thanks,
Nikilet

Re: Windows Defender

If you want Defender stopped you need to disable that service

Re: Windows Defender

In answer to your question, yes, by default, Vista comes with the Defender service enabled and Defender application enabled and working on your system.

A couple of AV Suite programs will disable Defender when they are installed, but if you are not running anything else, then disabling Defender from inside the defender applicaiton only disables the app from running - not the service, which you must disable separately, as mansrm81 stated.

Re: Windows Defender

I just want to make sure I understand.

I do have Defender shut off. When I go to Security and click on the item "Windows Defender" I get a pop up telling me that Windows Defender is shut off.

I went back to Services, clicked on the item and then clicked properties and although it shows "automatic" it does say the service is stopped. Guess I just didn't look closely enough.

Thanks!

Re: Windows Defender

Stephew: The easiest way is to click on the start button (lower left corner of your screen). On the right side you should see "Help and support." Click on that and type in Windows Defender. Topics will open up and one of them will be how to stop and start it.
