Gizmoya,

I use Avast Home Edition and have for years. I'm not saying it's the best but for me it is and it's never really let me down. It's completely free you just have to register and you get a product key for a year and then you can just do it again after the year is up.
It is an Antivirus program and it also has an anti malware module in it as well. That and having UAC enabled should suffice. Here is a list of some others as well.:)

Please define hack attempts- 3/hr - because my router continuously logs in attack rates as high as 5 per second at times - so it may not be your *suite* that is being attacked, it is your IP address that a botnet is trying to get into - and thus these attacks will continue regardless of *what* suite you use.

The fact that you know about them indicates that probably at least one of the suites warned you about the intrusion attempts, and that means that it was doing its job - if it hadn't, you'd never know and would have a compromised machine.

As I said - I get anywhere from 500-900 of those per day - your best defense it so block them *before* they get to your machine - by using a router with a good integrated firewall.

And, as I also stated, the only way you're going to see those reports is if the software you have is doing its job - and blocking those. Newer, better software is ***not*** going to stop attacks from *occurring* - it will continue to do the same thing, stopping the attacks from *affecting* you. Obviously what you have right now is working, so why would you want to change it?

I understand you want the best, but there is no *best* it frequently changes as the programs continually compete with new features and better response to 0-day attacks. What is rated s top notch today may not be so goo next month.

That all being said, search for VirusBulletin and go from there - a lot of testing going on to see who is doing well and who is lagging behind.

This much I can say - NOD32 almost always gets near top honors, but I haven't seen what it has done in the last 6 months or so....

As John as told you there never will be a best when it comes to security you go with what works for you and your needs.

There are always going to be spybots floating around trying to pick up open connections but if you practise safe hex you should be OK, keep your machine up to date with Windows critical updates have a good anti-virus program and keep it updated also a firewall and anti-spyware software, oh and don't go to dodgy sites plus getting stuff through P2P is asking for trouble as well.

I'm behind a router with NAT firewall, and running NOD32 v3 anti-virus, SuperAntiSpyware, Windows Defender, SpywareBlaster and the Vista Firewall.;)

I too get loads of these, right now a simultaneous batch of 10 every 10th minutes or so against various ports. The coordination makes me suspect think they come from the same computer spoofing the addresses.

Being totally ignorant to details of networking, I have often wondered how dangerous these bots are. I suppose they are scanning for vulnerabilities, perhaps reporting back if anything is found? Then some other program tries to exploit this? I would think (but may very very well be wrong) anyone must crack the password or find a computer with an account without password to get in. This brings me to the question of the necessity of a firewall for a private account, and whether such a firewall really needs to be top-of-the-line. Opinions?

gizmoya,
I would suggest Comodo Internet Security. It has a firewall and and antivirus. I use that along with Spybot S+D and MalwareBytes. I use these 3 programs and never have a problem. I am very very happy. I would very highly suggest these 3 which are all 3!
Let me know how it goes.
