Boy, I really know how to shoot myself in the foot...

Just got the laptop back on Tuesday after the hard drive crapped out on me...and it's finals, oh boy...

Don't know what I was thinking really, but I downloaded something tonight that gave me a virus, it was a program that kept coming up in my corner icon area...

I ran Avast, HijackThis! Malwarebites, and something else, and everything says I'm clean. I restarted into safe mode and tested it, and I'm safe there.

BUT...

I can't start the Security Center and alas, can't open System Restore.

Help? (god, I'm an idiot...usually much smarter than this...)

Hi rawbery79

If Joan's good advice does not solve you problem would you please post back with the detail of what the "something" in the tray is?

As it does not show in safe mode then It may be driver related.

Also if you have a retail DVD for vista you should be able to run the system restore from the recovery section.

If you do not have a DVD have a look at these tutorials

System Files - SFC Command - Vista Forums

Create a Recovery Disc - Vista Forums

Also have you let Avast run a "boot time" scan?
