Cannot turn on the Security Center

Hi,

My pc was infected a virus recently and it blocks me from turning my security center. I went through a virus scan and deleted it successfully but somehow I still cannot turn on the security center. How could I do to solve this?

Thank you.

Re: Cannot turn on the Security Center

Type SERVICES.MSC in the Search dialog box on the Start Menu, hold down Ctrl and Shift and Enter key to run as Administrator. Scroll down to the Security Center service in the window that opens up. Is its status set to Started and Startup Type set to Automatic - Delayed Start? If not, double click it and make those changes to the settings. Also check that the Log On tab shows Log on as This Account: Local Service. If the Log On tab does not show Log on as Local Service, then use these instructions (copied from Windows Help) to change that:

Configuring how a service is started
To configure how a service is started using the Windows interfaceTo configure how a service is started using the Windows interface
  1. Optionally, export and save a list of the existing settings. To do this, in the console tree, right-click the Services node, select Export List, and save the settings list.
  2. In the details pane, right-click the service that you want to configure, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, in Startup type, click Automatic, Manual, Disabled, or Automatic (Delayed Start).
  4. To specify the user account that the service can use to log on, click the Log On tab, and then do one of the following:
    • To specify that the service uses the Local System account, click Local System account.
    • To specify that the service uses the Local Service account, click This account, and then type NT AUTHORITY\LocalService.
    • To specify that the service uses the Network Service account, click This account, and then type NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService.
    • To specify another account, click This account, click Browse, and then specify a user account in the Select User dialog box. When you are finished, click OK.
  5. Type the password for the user account in Password and in Confirm password, and then click OK. If you select the Local Service account or Network Service account, the password must be blank.

Re: Cannot turn on the Security Center

To LeeTutor,

I tried the method you told me to do, but my security center still cannot be turned on (actually I tried this before I post my problem up here). Now wat can I do is let you know more about the detail of my problem. Whenever I turn on my pc a small window will popped out and stated "Application failed to initialize: 0x80070006. The handle is invalid." Anything you need to know bout it?

Thank you.

Re: Cannot turn on the Security Center

Here's a Microsoft article about that error message, concerning the built-in tool of the operating system called Windows Defender. It may apply to you:

Error message when you try to start Windows Defender on a computer that you recently upgraded to Windows Vista: "Application failed to initialize"
Error message when you try to start Windows Defender on a computer that you recently upgraded to Windows Vista: "Application failed to initialize"

Other than that, I think you may not have fully cleaned out the malware that infected you before. Try the free SuperAntiSpyware at www.superantispyware.com

Re: Cannot turn on the Security Center

If this was a recent malware infection have you considered using System restore to restore to a point before your system was compromised/corrupted?
You also might want to consider using a better antivirus/antimalware program. Try this online scanner/cleaner:http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
