This may be a simple question

Hello all.

This question is about thumb/flash drives. My computer local policy prohibits me from using it even though I am an administrator on my local machine. Can anyone tell me which specific policy I have to change to let me use a flash drive?

thanks.

Re: This may be a simple question

Hello Mskiy, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might check to see if these tutorials may be able to help you with this. Be sure to look in the same areas in Group Policy to see if you have anything that is set to anything other than Not Configured. If you do, then it may be responsible as well.

Drive Access - Restrict or Unrestrict

Removable Hard Disk Drives - Allow or Deny Read and Write Access

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: This may be a simple question

Another point to note with policies is that, whilst you can set global policies for the machine in the HKLM section of the registry, if any of the corresponding entries are also in the HKCU section then THOSE policies and settings take precedence - in other words, they can override the global settings.

Thats the problem. I set all that but still everytime I connect a flash drive to my laptop, I get an error saying that the policy is prohibiting me from veiwing it.

The only other thing I can think of for you to try is to skim through all of the Group Policy (gpedit.msc) settings looking at anything that is not set as Not Configured to see if that is the policy affecting this.
