accidentally ran a trojan program :)

ok about 2 weeks ago i ran a program on my computer. before i ran it, my virus scanner found no problems with it. but when i ran the program it acted very suspiciously. my firewall caught it trying to access the internet..then it said some other remote program was trying to connect to my computer. i blocked that request.

after that i virus scanned my computer and also did a windows defender scan. both found nothing. but when i submitted the file online to virustotal (scans a file with a bunch of virus scanners) it got a few virus hits.

i have not noticed any problems with my computer or any suspicious activity. however, i do have one question!!

***
when i ran the file the first time, THE FILE DISAPPEARED BY ITSELF AFTER I RAN IT. where did it go? did it delete itself?
***

i redownloaded the file again (but didn't run it) so that i could submit it to virustotal for testing. i also wanted to get the exact file name. i searched my entire computer (hidden + system folders) for that file name and it doesn't show up.

so again, when i ran it the first time and it disappeared, where did it go? is it possible it deleted itself?

thanks

well i did some more reading and it is common for a trojan to delete itself (or at least partly delete itself) after it has run.

Before you run a suspicious crack / app etc, try using uniextract on the .exe first. Sometimes it will isolate the hidden nasties that are added to the original .exe

i googled this:
trojan "deleted itself"

there were lots of results discussing it.

i use Avast and i still like it. i know each virus scanner doesn't detect all viruses. besides, i didn't have all the components of avast activated at the time.

when i sent the file to virustotal, it showed that kaspersky detected the virus in the file..so then i went to kaspersky's site and used the free online scanner on my system and didn't find anything else...so i guess i'm ok. after all, i did block the trojan when it tried to connect to me.
