| Vista 64 | Defender & Mcaffee redundant? My Mcaffe renews this month. I am wondering " Do I really need Mcafee" Right now I have Defender disabled, but if I were to enable it and then get a freebie like AVG then do I really need Mcaffee? Thanks Lolly |

| Vista Home Premium x86 / Win7 Ultimate x86 | Re: Defender & Mcaffee redundant? Did Mcaffee do it's job? Most people use free AV and some are satisfied. In case you're looking for comparisons, here's a source I like to refer to. In my opinion, the strength of your AV software is not really relevant. I have all Windows security features (defender, firewall, etc.) off except for "important" updates, of which I decide which to download and install. I use Comodo Firewall (Free), which comes along with a free AV as well. I don't rely on it's AV, but it's enough to warm me if a certain file happens to be suspicious, and even then I usually ignore it because I know where I'm downloading stuff from. As far as my system is concerned, having AV is redundant, because I trust my behaviour. I guess the question is, do you trust yourself? Do you need protection? How much do you need? If you visit random porn sites or download stuff from unknown sources, you may need to take some precautions. Otherwise, I believe AVG free is more than enough. IMHO |

| Vista Ultimate 64-bit, SP2 | Re: Defender & Mcaffee redundant? The reliability of the hand that clicks the mouse is one important layer of security. ![]() With Anti Virus progs remember that the free versions are ok, the paid versions are better. If you have been happy with McAfee why change? It is advisable to also use a program like SuperAntiSpyware or Malwarebytes. Both come with free versions. [links below] If you decide to use AVG free then Defender will work well with it. Let us know what you decide to do.
