Hello awlmyne,
Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs and then clicking Windows Defender.
Click Tools, and then click Options.
Under Administrator options, select the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
This should then enable you to see in Windows Security Centre - Malware Protection -
"Windows Defender is turned on."

[When Windows Defender is on, you will be alerted when spyware and other potentially unwanted software tries to install itself, run on your computer, or change important Windows settings. If you use the default settings, Windows Defender will also check for new definitions, regularly scan for spyware and other potentially unwanted software, and automatically remove any detected item that has a recommended removal action.]
Hope that helps.

Re: Defender auto turn on

Apparently I am missing something here - I have already done the Tools, Opt's., Admin. op's., Defndr. check box, Save, confirm steps. But when I "Run" Windows Security Center the Malware protection shows green & on for The Shield Deluxe 2009 antivirus but on the Spyware and other malware protection shows green & on only for The Shield Deluxe 2009. I have to select the link for showing all malware installed on comp. & when the window pops up I have to highlight Windows Defender & choose turn on option manually everytime. So I must be missing something else, not have something on or have it turned off someplace else. I am at a loss - I can keep doing the manual turn on each time but know there is a better option. Besides until just a couple days ago I didn't have to go through this, it was automatically on. I may have done something inadvertently & not realized it but don't know what. It is heck being so inept w/ comp's and the Internet. What I need is a tutor to sit by me, teach me & slap me when needed. Hope you all can bear w/ me!

Re: Defender auto turn on

If your Defender is scanning automatically at the pre set time & updating when necessary it may be that your anti spyware component of your Anti Virus Program is interfering & not allowing Defender to be shown in the Windows Security Centre / Malware Protection Protection /Spyware & other Malware.

Re: Defender auto turn on

It sounds like your anti-virus suite already has a Malware program.Just like a firewall 2 running at the same time is bad.
