Hello pussywillow,
You should only run one Anti Virus Program on your computer. Two or more AV progs interefere with each other & don't result in better security. In fact it creates all sorts of problems for your computer & you.
You will need to remove McAfee from your system first following the directions in the link below. Read the instructions very carefully prior to removing. There is a video included for you to watch to assist you.
Reboot on completion.
You will then have to decide if you wish to keep Avast or AVG as you preferred prog. Let us know which you decide on & we will help you with the next step.

How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee consumer products using the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe)

Hi pussy willow,
As you have decided on Avast - It would be advisable to run the McAfee Removal Tool. Remnants of the program could well remain on your computer.
You will also need to look in uninstall progs for anything AVG.
For your overall security - initially Anti Virus Prog, Window Firewall, Defender, UAC on & router firewall. Later, when the unwanted AV's have been removed, you can add some good anti malware progs that we can help you with.

hi rosie

JMH asked if I could give you a hand. I just need a minute to read the thread. be right back.

Ok so you have removed the Macaffee, and you still are having trouble downloading with the other anti virus, correct?

Just in case you come online while either of us are not could you disable the AVG just to try a download? make sure you re-enable it when you are done.
Let us know the results

Hi Rosie,
I'm sure Ken meant to say Avast above.
So just to clarify - disable Avast to try to download the McAfee Removal Tool.
Make sure you re-enable it when you are finished.

Good Morning Rosie

Im sorry this is taking so lond to resolve. Can you do me a favor. Built into vista is a tool called snipping tool. It can take a screen shot of the error message. to launch it go to start> search>type snipping tool.

What I would like you to do is try to open the file and when the error message pops up take a screenshot of it. If the error disappears when you try to take a screenshot you can also use the printscreen button.

Once you have a screenshot you will need to upload it to us. to di that you use the attachment icon (shaped like a paperclip) in the reply form.

Let me know if you need help

Hope i have done that right

Perfect. we are perplexed as to what is preventing you frome even downloading the update. There are several possibilities. I could be a security setting in you browser, or a policy, or a virus.

Let start by going into your event viewer. go to seaerch and type event viewer. You need to go to the windows log, application tab. Look for errors (they have red in the left hand column). there will be many, look errors that say something relating to the problem. If you find them write down the event ID and source code of them.

Let us know if you need any help with this.

Its just too strange that your browser works for everything else but not to go to anti virus sites. thats why I had you go to malwarebytes.org. You could try one more if you want to convince yourself but I think you Have a TSR virus. We can eliminate it without re-installing you OS but it is obviously safer if we do.

What is on the HD? anything you really need?

here is what I would like you to do. go to search and type msconfig go to the startup tab and uncheck anything that isnt microsoft. then reboot. see if you can go to avg, or any anti virus site and download. If you can we can start eliminating possibilities

Hi again, run avast and panda scan and coming up clear

Have not done the misconfig one yet as had them running, should i make any back up discs before i do that or will it not affect my pc, i really don't want to lose anything as a new pc, was wondering i have updates to install for IE 8 but do like 7 should i update to 8 would that make any difference

Rosie

before you decide on IE why dont you try one of the update sitee that you were unable to download from. If you truely are virus free then your original problem probably still exists.
