Windows Defender

There were threads about this but they were more than 68 days old and it wouldn't let me post in them.

Basically is this thing good enough to protect you like an AV program can? Just wondering.

Re: Windows Defender

Windows Defender is mainly used to protect your computer from spyware, popups, slow performance and other unwanted software. So I think an Anti-Virus application would still be in order.

Here is Microsoft's page on Window Defender so you can further your knowledge of the program:

Re: Windows Defender

Good computer security is based on -
You & what you click on
An Anti Virus Program - one only.
Anti Malware progs like Defender. If you are interested we can recommend others.
Computer Firewall
Router Firewall.
Strong passwords.
UAC
etc. etc.

The first two will conflict. Symantec pretty much recommends disabling Windows Defender.

Also, what do the different type of firewalls do? Computer, router etc.

Re: Windows Defender

If you are using Symantec follow their advice.
Have a browse through this article to see if it answers your questions re Firewalls.

Re: Windows Defender

Do any of those 2 AV's recommend disabling Defender? For some reason Symantec does.

Re: Windows Defender

I do not recommend disabling Defender. I use Norton on XP and also run Defender. There is no conflicts. I use Avast with Vista and also run Defender. No conflicts.

Re: Windows Defender

It won't be apparent right away, but I don't see why an AV like symantec would "recommend" disabling Windows Defender (detected it then recommended disabling it) if there is indeed nothing that may hamper the AV, just saying.
