I have been running my Vista PC with Windows Defender plus AVG Free 8.5 - no problems, it works OK for me. I have just updated AVG Free to version 9.0 and it is turning Windows Defender off. Any ideas please?

Hello Longbelly,

Sometimes AVs turn off the Windows Defender. The same is with the new Microsoft Security Essentials. However, you can turn on the Defender manually and scan your computer let's say weekly.

You might check if Defender is set to turn on automatically, on the boot. But even so, the AVG may block Defender to work properly. To check it, type "services" without quotes in the search and run it as administrator. In Servies window scroll down to Windows Defender and check, if it is set to automatic under the Startup Type.

Cheers...

longbelly,
I also noted the same reaction, after updating AVG Anti Virus Pro from 8.5 to 9, for a couple of days. Make sure you keep your AVG updated & I think you will find the problem will be corrected. [Mine has been on two computers. Both AVG & Defender are again working in harmony.]

Many AV turns off Windows defender and any ways its of no use. So better to keep it turned off IMO.
