encryption

Who/What is encrypting my files and folders without asking me first? When it started, I could still search and find the folder. But now I can't find it. I know encryption is a good tool, but I want to control it. It's my "Images" folder with all my NASA images etc. XP was never so bold, but Vista seems to think it knows best. That would be OK if it actually did. But it's too stupid. New windows open behind old ones. Thats just one unimportant issue that adds up to a million big-time annoyances.
What's your opinion on investment in Window7? Is it a fix or does it have its own set of problems? My view is that they should distribute it for free. Thanks for listening and please send me a reply or two, and I apologize if I'm not posting in the right place. Each time I found postings on encryption, it was a public forum. Let me get it out "I HATE VISTA!!!!!!" Thanks, that's a little better.

my system: Vista Home Premium on an Acer Aspire 6930 64-bit laptop.
