... cannot open volume for direct access

I'm running Vista Sp2 upgrading from Windows Xp sp3 . Everything is OK except one thing when I'm trying to run the disk tool Checknow ( chkdsk ) in full form (all checked) , after Restarting to activate the tool I get the message :" ... cannot open volume for direct access .Windows has finished checking the disk ". After that the computer loads Windows normally and everything is OK.
No problem in Disk Managment , Device Manager etc. If I leave unchecked the box : "Automatically fix file system errors" the tool works perfect in the Windows enviroment . Any help appreciated .
