operating system not found

I have an hp g6032ea laptop with vista home premium.
it was recently dropped and now on start up all we get is a black screen with operating system not found.
I suspect that the hard drive is either scratched or cracked as it makes a rather ominous clicking sound.
I have a brand new 160gb hard drive which i have fitted and a recovery disc which i purchased from HP as the machine did not come with one.
when the new drive is inserted if I boot from the recovery cd it starts the process then puts up a message stating that the laptop is not supported by the recovery disc and switches itself off.

does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong?
this is driving me nuts and it will shortly be leaving by the nearest window

I agree with theog. I would contact HP support as soon as possible to get a new DVD. The longer you wait the harder it will be to get an exchange.

finally after 4 phone calls 2 webchats with the help desk and 3 e-mails including one to hp's ceo's office, I have had a new recovery disc delivered today.

unfortunately it does exactly the same as the the previous one.

Help!!!!

It would seem that the original cause of the problem, i.e. the dropping of the laptop, has caused internal damage, probably a cracked motherboard, as well as the obvious symptom of a damaged hard drive. What you could do is to try removing and reinserting the memory, optical and HDD, and battery, just in case it is a loose connection. See the manual for instructions on how to do this.
