Unwanted upload

I hope I'm in the correct thread as this is a security or perhaps internet issue.

All the time I'm online my NetMeter graph tells me the computer is uploading. Unfortunately and worryingly I have no idea what is being uploaded or where it is being uploaded to. In fact it is uploading even while I'm writing this message. Today its sent about 20Mb of something to somewhere! You can imagine why I'm worried.

I use DropBox as an online backup plus occasionaly I use ADrive for the same purpose. Neither of those programs are running - as far as I know.

I use PCSecurity and I've scanned for all the usual suspects and the prog is up to date. I have Windows update on automatic as well.

Has someone any idea what is going on please?

hello Efrance,
Just to be sure, download and run this free app.

Malwarebytes.org

Give this a go and post the results, good luck.

Thanks for the fast reply. I did the scan last night and this morning made sure that Windows was up to date, did a full scan with my Security Shield program and just for luck also did a scan with my Advanced System Care program. None of them turned up any malware or viruses.

The machine is still uploading stuff and has sent almost 1Mb in 30 minutes on my so called 1Mb connection.

DropBox is not launched and I have uninstalled ADrive as a precaution. I have no unusual programs installed and generally keep to sites that should pose no threat - I'm too old to take any risks with my heart!

This is the text of the Malwarebytes program scan report. Incidentally it seems to say that I use IE8 but in fact I use Firefox.

Many thanks for your advice and in the meantime I'm unplugging my modem just to slow down the upload. Will come back online after lunch - shopping takes precedence over computer probs, by order LOH, bless her.

Cheers,

Mike

You show no virus or malware, make sure that you have a good firewall. There may be one with your antivirus software. If not there are many good ones that you can download. If you would like additional information, just post.

If you want to turn on the built in firewall, this should help

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off

A good firewall should stop the mysterious activity, unless you give permission.

Try using IE and see if you still get the upload.

Sorry for the delay guys - been away for a couple of days.

Richard, I use PC Security's Security Shield and within the parameters for the firewall is a 'white list' which gives those sites apparently approved by SS. As it includes such sites as 'xchat' I have some doubt about it so have sent them a question as to how I delete a site on the list. It is not clear how to do that.

While I'm waiting I have put the parameters onto 'deny all' which does seem to have quietened the uploads. Microsoft Firewall was already switch on - is it possible that it might conflict with SS?

Stony, using IE might not prevent the uploads as they continue while the browser is closed.

Thank goodness for NetMeter 'cos without that information I would have had no idea the upload was going on.

One other point is that my broadband system is via satellite as we live in a very remote part of France. Viveole, the system we use sends a signal - is that a ping? - every minute or so from Astra 1 which shows up on the Status page of the website and as a blip on NetMeters' graph. In the past we have had updates etc from them which have caused some strange things for a few days while its sorted out among them activity which includes both upload and download. Perhaps this is/has been going on and may settle down.

C'est la vie, as our neighbours would say.

If I may I'll give you all a shout later when/if it all settles down.

Cheers and thanks again. Mike
