Anti virus program questions. (AVG?)

Hello Vistsa forums. I have a question about anti virus programs.

Recently I had some trouble with malware and came to realize how truly useless McAfee is, as my friend put it "its a DCS anti virus (doesn't catch ****)".

A few people recommended AVG and after doing some research it seems to be the way to go.

I was wondering what your opinions on AVG are and if there is anything else I could use to keep my comp safe. (I have ad block plus for firefox and malwarebytes but thats all. I feel bad for not being more careful with my poor machine, it's been abused)

Another thing. Would it be smart to just go ahead and remove McAfee from my computer completely after I get a new virus program?

AVG is a good antivirus program but MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) does the job as well as if not better and is a lot less intrusive. In either case, yes, you should remove the old antivirus program (running two is not recommended, ever).

Thank you Jonathan.

Alright well I took your advice and got MSE but there seems to be a slight hitch. It's telling my my computer is at risk and that I need to update my Virus and Spyware definitions, so I click the update button and... nothing. No update window or scanning now type screen just.. Silence. How do I update this thing?

EDIT: I'm sorry. After waiting twenty minuets with no blinking lights and security screens to scroll through I assumed it wasn't doing anything, but now I'm protected and things are scanning like they should be.

Thanks guys!

You're welcome... told you it was less intrusive... now you are a believer.

Hahaha. Yes it's so un-intrusive I thought it wasn't working. That's almost sad.
Sad that the other anti-viruses feel the need to be so annoying, yes.

Good choice. I dropped AVG like a rock once MSE came out. I had the paid version of AVG for about 2 years after using the free version before that. It just got worse and worse with every update/upgrade.
I dumped AVG with about 6 months left on my paid version(2 years paid). That's how annoying it got.

I don't necassaryly agree and have found some of them that create other side effects and had to be removed. Couple of days ago; can't remember the site that did in fact rate AVG at or very near the bottom; my occurance removed it a couple months ago because the newest version caused problems, also Panda and avira. Maybe not ready for prime time x64; don't know.Am now tryiny Super anti spyware pro, trial, so far no problems. Will try Vipre and MSE upon experation of current installed.

Once a month will run online eset.

They are one of the constantly better rated apps and do have an online scanner. With that said the two attempts to do an online scan was both met with "site is down", that was a few months ago. Have not used their suite as it is a pay per view.
If you desire a paid suite that are rated quite well by more that one org.
