Today, I had this problem:

My computer froze, it was just displaying black (it was turned on, just not displaying anything). And then, it came up with a screen about 5 minutes later. It just said windows was loading files with a loading bar a the bottom, that took about 30 minutes to complete and then it said that there had been an error with the booting and would i like to repair the boot files, when i clicked yes, it took about 5 minutes then came up with another messge saying that it could not be fixed, would i like to send an error report, so i did.

It then repeated this for about 5 times. Then i decided to insert the vista disc and repair it from that. The bios screen came up saying would i like to boot from the disc (press any key) but i am unsure whether i actually pressed a key or it disappeared. Then it booted normally

nope, i haven't installed anything new recently, the latest piece of software that i have installed was Trusteer Rapport, but that was about a month ago. I have used the HP disk error checker, the HP hardware checker, the Windows Vista Error Checker (on my C:\ drive), i didn't want to try a SFC just yet, ive tried the error checker on the bios screen. All of these tests haven't shown any faults or any sign of an error though.
