About a week and a half ago I had an email and gaming account compromised. After scanning w/my AV program (Avast) nothing came up....i've formatted and reinstalled , maybe im paranoid...but want to make sure this system is secure and Im not sure if it is:(. I know alot of people say registery cleaners are worthless here, but i used uniblues process scanner and some key processes have foriegn languages infront of their decription (ie,explorer.exe has the russian or sometimes danish word for operating system). looking like this scan for example: ProcessLibrary.com - The online resource for process information! Im running avast again and still no viruses/trojans found. Ran CCleaner,MalwareBytes anti-malware and spybot search and destroy with nothing detected. Only strange things I have noticed is when i use IE,2 iexplorer.exe run in task manager. Am i being overly paranoid? Any help/comments appreciated, posting a hijack this log along with this.

Is your copy of Avast the free version, or the full version? Is it a legal copy?

From looking at your HJT log file, I would say that there is a very small chance you have a virus.

Do you live in a densely populated area? With houses in range of your wireless network

How exactly did you manage to have your email account compromised?

Did you get an email supposedly from one of your Contacts, offering goods, ie Mobile/Cell phones at cheaper than normal prices, and click on the link?

Is your email problem fixed, and how did you manage to do this?

I suggest that you login to your official secure websites for your email accounts, and change all of your passwords. Do not link via your current email site!

There are two similar nasties doing the rounds, where if your email account is compromised, will not allow you access to your in and out boxes, and are using your email address as a post box.

Hello,

Your HiJackThis log is clean (which does not necessarily mean you have no viruses, but I really think you are clean. Most viruses would leave some small trace in a HiJackThis log) However, there are two defunct entries that should be removed (this does not indicate a virus, and is just housework) Please run a scan without generating a log file, carefully put a check next to the following entries, and click Fix Checked.

Code:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

O23 - Service: nProtect GameGuard Service (npggsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\GameMon.des.exe (file missing)
When the file is missing, the service etc. is not going to work and so can be safely removed to tidy the computer.

If you are still worried, (and I don't think you need to be) follow these instructions (not originally written by me, but still apply):

Download GMER Antirootkit from http://gmer.net/download.php

Mirror location: http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip This version will download a zip. If you use this mirror, please unzip it to a folder that you create such as C:\Gmer\.

Disconnect from the internet and disable all active protection so your security program drivers will not conflict with gmer's driver.

Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. a1afk10a.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.

For mirror version, double-click Gmer.exe to run the program.

When the program opens, click the ">>>" Tab

Click the "Rootkit/Malware" Tab.

Select all drives that are connected to your system to be scanned.

Click the Scan button.

When the scan is finished, click Copy to save the scan log to the Windows clipboard.

Open Notepad or a similar text editor.

Paste the clipboard contents into a text file by clicking Edit -> Paste or Ctrl + V

Save the gmer scan log to your desktop.

Close Gmer.

Download RSIT by random/random from http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe and save it to your desktop.
* Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
* Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
* Once it has finished, two logs will open. If it does not automatically open, then these logs can be found at %systemdrive%\rsit folder (typically C:\rsit)
Post back with GMER log + both RSIT logs. Unless you really cannot do this, please upload the log files as attachments rather than posting inline. Thanks!
Richard

How exactly did you manage to have your email account compromised?
Good question...if i knew I wouldn't be as paranoid atm:o My av program picked up nothing, along with 2 online scanners. Malware/spyware progs had the same result.

Did you get an email supposedly from one of your Contacts, offering goods, ie Mobile/Cell phones at cheaper than normal prices, and click on the link?
No, im careful about attachments and links in emails.

Is your email problem fixed, and how did you manage to do this?
Yes, I was lucky and whoever changed my email password didnt change alternate emails listed in the account...I changed the pw from a secure computer that day (after seeing an email that my pw was changed ofc:()

I suggest that you login to your official secure websites for your email accounts, and change all of your passwords. Do not link via your current email site!
Did that the first day...

My real concern now is finding out if this systems secure, and about the process scanner results (linked). Honestly didnt use any process scanner or reg. cleaner before this...but been trying to track down the cause of what happened since av/malware came up with nothing, and the process names are not normal within that scan

My Computer

Thanks for the reply niemiro , my biggest concern was that i might have a virus/keylogger or that key window startup processes were messed with. Im usually very careful (the email addy that was compromised ive had since 1997/98) so when this happen and i couldnt find the cause, my paranoia hit stalin-like proportions to say the least :(

My Computer

You are most welcome, and I think you are fine virus wise.

Couldn't it be possible for somebody to have hacked into his router and is monitoring and decrypting the web traffic? If someone had done this, then surely he could have got the email account that way.

What router do you have? Does it have security (e.g. NAT)?
