Looking for help on this. I have AVG9free installed on my PC which, I feel, should be adequate. I did a complete PC scan, as I often do, to-day and it stated that all was well. Earlier, I had gone on to a website and another Anti Virus programme offered me
a trial stating that it had found a number of Trojans and Corrupted files. It offered
to remove these if I activated a License. I promptly removed it from my PC (it had downloaded onto it) and was very suspicious. Any views on this ? My view is that
AVG would surely have found these "problems" if they were really there. It was when I was in Google Images that this thing occured.

Also may I add That I wouldn't recommend Using more Than 2 Anti-virus at any One time Because your Computer will Slow down and your Hard Disk Drive (HDD) life Will significantly Shorten

I guessed it was a scare tactic and I shall install what you suggest. I have NEVER used more than one Security system at the same time just for the record.

My Computer

After installing the Security Systems recommended I find that I have lost a Restore Point for 21st July last that I was keeping as an "insurance" against further problems. Any ideas as to why this should happen ?

My Computer

Do you have enough space in the recovery partition for that SR point?

How does one go about ascertaining this ? My main system drive has plenty of space on it and my vssadmin
figure is set at about 39gb. Is this what you mean ?

My Computer

Yes, how much of 39gb did you use?

Here are the Shadow Storage readings:-

Drive C: Used Shadow Storage Space 797.703MB
Allocated Shadow Storage.Space 2.496GB
Maximum Shadow Storage Space. 39GB

Drive D: Used Shadow Storage Space 147.953MB
Allocated Shadow Storage Space 374.125MB
Maximum Shadow Storage Space 39GB

The Maximum Spaces are the only ones that I can alter. Would you consider these
appropriate for retaining Restore Points ? Sorry to labour on about this,Rich, but I
should really like to get "a handle" on the whole matter.

My Computer

First, I am here to give you as much help as you need, dont be shy and dont hold back. I enjoy this, so ask away.

Yes, you have enough space. When the space runs out the only thing that happens is that the oldest restore point is deleted (which you no longer need, it is old) and a new one is made.
I will look for a tutuorial that will help explain this.

Hello Rich,
Thanks again. In one of the links you supplied it suggested that,in the Services
applications, this should be set to Manual. Mine was set to Automatic and Started. I have amended this to Manual and Started. But I still am a little puzzled in the matter.
However, I do Backups to an external Hard Drive (not full Image as I am only on
Vista Home Premium) every couple of weeks. I still have a copy of the one for the 21st July last. Would it not be better for me to rely on this if a problem does occur though it is a much slower process. Thanks a zillion once again.

My Computer

I think that it is better to keep current points. Lets assume that on December 25 of this year, you have a problem and use the July 21 SR point, you will lose many changes that you want and made between July 21 and Dec 25. If the system is working properly on Dec 21 and you have a problem on Dec 25, why not use the current one.

This is what I do. I made a complete copy of my hard drive with the free software from Paragon and put it away. I make the SR points, automatic once a week. A problem with the OS, I have the current SR point. If I have a major problem or the HD goes I have the Hard Drive Image.

By default Vista makes a restore point at 12:00 Midnight and when you start your computer. Some people turn off the "on start up" one with the Task Scheduler.

Hi Rich,
I feel the matter is now resolved and I fully take on board your points about "long distant" Restore Points
My computer IS working perfectly at the moment and I feel I should leave it at that and just use recent ones IF NEEDED. I shall look into the Paragon Imaging software as. regrettably, Vista Home Premium does not give one this option ..pity. I see Win 7 does. You have been a tremendous help in all this and have put my mind at ease on the matter...many,many thanks.

My Computer

You are very welcome BluePeter, I am glad that I was able to help. If you have any other concerns, just post and another member or myself will offer the best help that we can. Good luck
