Turning off security essentials & firewall still won't connect to FTP...

... When all other machines (mac & win 7) on the same LAN can with no trouble... This is only when on active mode however, I tried filezilla and dreamweaver, neither can connect to this FTP server that I have using active mode. They however can connect to passive mode FTP servers.

Other machines are able to connect to this active mode FTP server without issues... So only this specific machine cannot. It has no other firewall or antivirus running.

I'm out of ideas already... Anyone had the same thing before?!

Thanks,

Julius

Hi Julius,

What browser are you using (name and version)? What version of Vista are you using (e.g., 32-bit Vista Business SP2 - not just 32-bit). Are you using a special FTP program to connect (if so, what manufacturer, name, and version - you provided some but not all of that)?

Is this YOUR Home Network FTP Server or one on the internet. If yours, what operating system is it using (full name and version and service pack)? Has a connection of this type ever been successful with this Vista computer before or with any Vista computer using that FTP method with that FTP server?

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates.

If that doesn't work, try to boot into safe mode (repeatedly click the F8 key while booting and go to safe mode with networking). Then let's check some of your system files:

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.

Type sfc /scannow and enter and let it run. It will scan and try to fix some of your system files. Hopefully it will complete with no corruption it could not repair (if there is such corruption post back here or try to analyze it to find the problem file(s) using http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228. Try to attach the report (you may need to copy it to your desktop before it will permit you to attach it) here so we can see if they can be repaired with good copies from the installation disk (unless there are too many).

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run. It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart. Answer yes and then reboot to run the program. It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.

If that doesn't work, then please post any error messages from the Event Viewer concerning FTP (Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Event Viewer). Here's how to use Event Viewer: http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm. Look in the System section and the Application Section.

If that doesn't work, try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit causing the problem. Follow the procedures in the article. Once found, delete, remove, deactivate, or uninstall it. Once done be sure to reset Vista back to normal status as explained in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal status and reboot - this solution is not going to work.

Boot into Safe mode with networking and see if the problem occurs there. Either result helps us narrow down the search for the cause.

I hope this helps resolve or at least identify the problem. Please provide all requested results, files, scans, and answers as I don't know at this point which will or won't be useful (and I don't fully understand the setup yet).

Thanks and good luck!

P.S. Don't operate online for long without MSE and Windows Firewall enabled. If testing, turn them off for the test, but turn them back on again as soon as the test is done. We don't want to add an infection or a hack to the current problem.

Thanks but I narrowed it down to Checkpoint VPN client, as soon as this is removed, it started working again.

But now I'm having an issue of it not recognizing computer names on the local network, IPs work though. Netbios is enabled already and I ran out of ideas so I resorted to editing the host file instead...

Thanks for the update, but I'm not quite clear if you still need any help. Do we need to find a way to get it to work with the Checkpoint VPN client installed? Did editing the hosts file work?

I'm hoping the problems are solved - but we're here if they still aren't and you'll explain what still needs to be addressed.

Good luck and best wishes!

Yes I got the checkpoint and ftp working OK but now it won't see local computers by their names even if Netbios is turned on. So I've had to edit the host file to map names with 192.168.1.* IPs. It's not an elegant solution but works for the time being, I wonder why it's stopped recognising names though... any ideas? Many thanks!

Please go to http://www.vistax64.com/network-sharing/284688-network-posting-tips.html and follow the procedures there. The first may help me ID the problem and the second may actually simply resolve it (though that's merely a hope - but it has helped with other network-related problems and may here as well).

Incidentally, when you try to access by host name (that isn't in the hosts file), what EXACT error message do you get (word-for-word including any codes)? I'm hoping for an error code of some kind to see if I can research the problem using that information.

FYI, I've seen cases where this is caused by a DNS problem (and not NetBios) - and that's part of what I'm looking for in the IPCONFIG screenshots and hoping to fix with that batch file.

In any event, I'm glad to hear you're essentially up and running even if not at 100% yet.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!
