Firewall blocking sites???

My biggest question is when I've tried to download files from Hotfile, File Factory, File Sonic, Fileserve and Megaupload. I get a window saying:

Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at
(insert Hotfile or any of the others)

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. (They work on my wife's laptop so that's not the problem.)

I can get to all other sites except some places to watch video like CBS.

I use Windows Firewall but when I opened up that program and looked at "allow a program through Windows Firewall", I noticed that Firefox was NOT checked. (As well as Mozilla Firefox) That's what I use all time. How can it get through if it's not checked? And I couldn't find anything that related to those websites.

But, I can download from Rapidshare, Sendspace, and Oron.

Any ideas for me so I can fix these problems? Is it my firewall or some setting in Firefox?

Thank you,
Tony

Welcome
Temporarily disable the Firewall and then we can go from there. Lets see what is the problem. I doubt if its the firewall

If it does work after you disable, I can tell you how to change the settings. Lets go one step at a time.
If it does not work, try with IE, for a test. The more information I have the quicker we can resolve this temporary problem.

Thanks Rich for the very quick reply. Next time I won't take so long getting back to you.

I temporarily disabled Windows Firewall. Still not allowed to get to wanted sites.
Tried I.E. - same outcome.

Received this message:

"www.fileserve.com" is not set up to establish a connection on port "World Wide Web service (HTTP) with this computer.
It went on to say the "Windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically.

First
Take your time, if you do not get back to me right away no problem.
From this point on lets work with IE 8. That is my browser and I am familiar with the settings.

Two things to try.
Set up a new user account and see if you can get into those sites
Second
IE>tools>internet options>security
Put those sites in trusted zone.

Disable your anti virus for testing purposes.

I've used Firefox for several years now, how do I set up a new user account in I.E.?

Second
IE>tools>internet options>security
Put those sites in trusted zone.

Tried this. It wouldn't let me put in the sites because they don't have the "s" after the "http" like, https://

Got to go to bed now, check back later.

Thanks for your patience and help.

Rich,

Sorry about the delay. 3 days of flu will slow me down. Actually stop me completely.

I shut off Windows Defender for an hopur.
I shut off Avast for an hour.
I used I.E. instead of Firefox.
I changed user. I never use it for the 'net.
Still getting message: Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage

Anything in mind now?

Thanks for the help.
