Fake Windows Vista Recovery alert

My sons laptop got infected by the fake Vista Recovery scam. Whereupon loading the system takes over the desktop and begins to run though what look to be sever hard disk problems plus Ram overheating in fact you name it and they've come up with it :)

So I "system restored" back a few weeks and that seemd to do the trick until I tried surfing via Firefox. Now I'm getting redirects when I try to connect to any security sites such as Eset or Malawarebytes. Currently running and Eset Online scan but dont hold out much hope for finding anythging with that so has anybody got any bright ideas on how to remove this PITA ?

I can connect via other PC's in the house but I'd have to burn any programs you recommend onto a CD to try and load onto my son's laptop in Safe Mode perhaps ?

Thanks in advance

Thanks Jacee I'm on the case :D

On a slightly different topic but as a matter of interest, how many people on here have moved on to Windows 7 from Vista and is it a relatively simple task to migrate from one to the other ?

OK thanks to you both we now have a fully functional laptop albeit with a new version of Malwarebytes and a few other useful scanning programs. Would like to know how this got on to my son's machine as we'd just purchased Kaspersky's all singing/dancing security software :(

He uses his iphone to connect to the laptop so do we need to think about Mobile screening software as well ?
